Ecostatic Dwell Times
There are many benefits to electrostatics, including meeting the dwell time of disinfectants; so this has been created to explain in detail and compare the significance of dwell times when utilising electrostatic technology.
Dwell time is the amount of time a solution stays moist on the surface for.
When testing disinfectants against micro-organisms the main testing is a variety of EN tests. I.e. EN1276, EN13697 EN 1500 etc. In many of these tests, the bacteria is suspended in the disinfectant, and results are normally tested after 1, 5, and 10 minutes of contact time.
Example:- A disinfectant achieves a Log 6 (99.9999%) against C.Difficile within 5 minutes. This means that when the disinfectant is to be used, it NEEDS to stay moist on the surface for 5 minutes to kill C.Difficile to a log 6.
Comparison of application methods:
Trigger Sprayers / Sprayers - When people are applying disinfectants, the majority spray and wipe away within 5 - 10 seconds, therefore not adhering or complying with the test data that the solution has been tested for. It also runs on vertical surfaces and you will not achieve an even coating, along with cross contamination when wiping.
Foggers - Great for applying in large areas and when the area does not need to be used again for 2 - 4 hours. Most foggers spray droplets at a size of between 5 - 25 microns and there they will continue to float in the Environment. These can then move from room to room and hang in the air for hours. Using a Drager Hydrogen Peroxide Gas Detection Meter you will see that HP is still detected in the air after it has been applied and anything over 1, means the area is still out of use.
Electrostatics - Using electrostatics, avoids both the above issues. Firstly we ‘spray and walk away’ after the room has been cleaned. With the electrostatics, our droplets will not run on vertical surfaces nor do we need to wipe; with this, it allows the solution to deliver a real representation of its test data due to the droplets staying moist on the surface for 5 - 10 minutes. (dependant on ambient temperature and nozzle selection).
Applicators - All applicators are better than none but it is understanding what you are doing and when. Knowing your applicator is key and there is no one system that fits all but there is one system that will deliver every time when applying water-based disinfectants and pesticides.
Eco Statics Sprayers - When you are next spraying with a trigger spray, time yourself between applying it and wiping it. Then look at the test data of the solution that you are applying and see how long it must remain moist on the surface for. Most contact times are 5 - 10 minutes, which makes using trigger sprayers ineffective.
When you are next fogging a room, ward or office, ask yourself ‘Can I save my company money?’, whether it be in time or the cost of applying less solution. Also what savings could be achieved by allowing access back into the area that has been sprayed after the 10 minutes, instead of 2 - 4 hours like foggers.
